choosing a car

Is an Ertiga enough for six adults?

This is the most common question we are asked before a booking, and it is usually asked as though it has a yes or no answer. It does not.

Six adults fit in an Ertiga. Whether they should depends on three things, and the first one matters far more than the other two.

1. Hours — and this is the real answer

Not distance. Hours in the car in a single stretch.

  • Up to about three hours: six adults are fine. Genuinely fine, not “manageable”. This is most temple runs, most airport transfers, most city-to-nearby-town journeys.
  • Three to five hours: the third row becomes noticeable. Adults will shift around, and whoever is back there will be glad to get out. Acceptable if the alternative is a much higher fare, and worth asking the group about.
  • Beyond about six hours: no. We will tell you no, and we will offer to arrange something bigger.

The reason is the third row’s geometry rather than its width: the seat base sits low, so adults sit with knees higher than is comfortable over time. Twenty minutes of that is nothing. Six hours of it is something you remember about the holiday.

2. Who is actually sitting there

Two children in the third row removes the problem almost entirely. Children do not have the knee-room issue and are frequently happier back there than in the middle.

Two smaller adults for a medium journey is workable.

Two tall adults for a long day is the combination that generates complaints, and it is the one we ask about specifically.

Somebody has to sit in the third row. It is worth deciding who before you book, because that conversation in the car park at 5am is worse than this one.

3. Luggage — and here the answer is harder

With all three rows occupied, you have the space behind the third row and nothing else. That takes cabin bags and soft bags. It does not take large suitcases.

So:

  • Six people, overnight bags: fine.
  • Six people, one large case between them: fine.
  • Six people, six large suitcases: no. Not “tight” — it does not fit, and no amount of packing skill changes that.

If you are six people going away for a week, the luggage rules this out before the seating does. That is a bigger vehicle, and we will say so.

The road matters too

Three hours of good highway and three hours of ghat hairpins are not equivalent experiences from the third row. On a mountain route we would shorten the comfortable threshold rather than stretch it — the Valparai or Kodaikanal climbs in particular.

What we do about it

We ask the two questions on the phone: how many people, and how many hours. If the answers put you outside the comfortable range, we say so and arrange a larger vehicle from the wider fleet rather than taking the booking anyway.

That costs us the fare occasionally. It is still the right trade — a cramped six-hour journey produces a review that costs considerably more than one booking.

The Ertiga page has the boot figures and the honest account of the third row. Ertiga or Innova covers the comparison if you are weighing the upgrade.

Frequently asked questions

So can six adults fit?

Six adults fit. Whether they should is a different question, and the answer depends almost entirely on how many hours they will be in there. Under about three, yes. Over about six, no.

What if two of the six are children?

That changes it completely. Two children in the third row is comfortable for a full day. The third row's limitation is adult knee room, and children do not have that problem.

Can six adults bring luggage?

Cabin bags, yes. Large suitcases, no — with all three rows occupied you only have the space behind the third row. Six people with six large cases needs a bigger vehicle, and that is not a close call.

Is it different on a good highway versus a ghat road?

Yes. Three hours of smooth highway in the third row is very different from three hours of hairpins. On a ghat route we would shorten the comfortable threshold rather than extend it.

What do you recommend for six adults on a full-day trip?

A larger vehicle, and we will arrange one. We would rather move you than have you spend eight hours regretting the saving.

We rent one car, the chauffeur-driven Maruti Ertiga, across Chennai, Bangalore, Coimbatore, Madurai and Mysore — and if the honest answer for your trip is a bigger vehicle, we will say so and arrange one. Rates are published, and the car is described in full.
