Outstation from Mysore — a gateway city, with fixed timings

Mysore’s position is its whole outstation story. Within a few hours you can reach three wildlife reserves, two hill regions and two other states — and unlike any other city on this site, several of those destinations run on timetables you cannot negotiate with.

That is what this page is really about.

The reserves, and the timings that govern them

Bandipur and Nagarhole are the closest reserves, and both run safaris in fixed morning and afternoon slots. Miss the slot and you have driven there for nothing.

So we work backwards. Tell us which safari you are aiming for and the departure time comes from that, with the drive treated as longer than the map implies — because the last stretch of these approaches is not highway.

The Bandipur night restriction is the other timing constraint, and it catches people. The highway through the reserve toward Wayanad closes to traffic overnight to protect animal crossings. That is a hard limit on when a Kerala-bound trip can leave and when it can arrive. We plan around it. Arriving at a closed barrier at midnight is a genuinely bad night.

Two states, two permits

• Inside Karnataka, no permit: Coorg, Bandipur, Nagarhole, Chikmagalur, Hampi, Mangalore, Bangalore.
• Kerala, permit applies: Wayanad, Kozhikode, and onward.
• Tamil Nadu, permit applies: Ooty and the Nilgiris, usually via Gundlupet.

Coorg, the most-booked trip from here

Coorg is the destination Mysore sells most: coffee country, a comfortable half-day drive, and no permit. Three days works well — out and settle, a full day there, and back with a stop at Srirangapatna or the Tibetan settlement near Kushalnagar on the way.

Two days is possible. Most of the second one is spent driving.

Onward, not just out and back

A pattern worth mentioning because it saves people money: a great many trips from Mysore are not round trips. Visitors finishing a Mysore loop frequently continue to Coorg, Wayanad or Ooty and fly home from Bengaluru or Kozhikode rather than returning here.

If that is your plan, say so — it is a one-way drop and it costs less than a round trip you will not use the second half of.
