Outstation from Madurai — we quote circuits, not kilometres

Madurai is the one city on this site where the per-kilometre rate is almost the wrong question. People here do not book a car to reach a destination. They book a car for four days, and what they need is an itinerary that works and a total price.

So that is what we quote: one figure covering the distance, the daily minimum across the days, driver bata per day, the night halt, and any permit — with toll and parking at actuals and receipts.

The four destinations, and what each costs you in days

Rameswaram. Out across the Pamban crossing, which is the part of the drive people remember. Worth timing for daylight. One night there makes a comfortable three-day trip with Madurai.

Kanyakumari. The southern tip, and further than it looks on a map. Adding it to a Rameswaram trip makes a tight three days and a good four.

Kodaikanal. Up through Batlagundu and the ghat. A hill destination in the middle of an otherwise flat circuit, and it changes the character of the trip — cooler, slower, and better with two nights than one.

Thekkady. Over the border into Kerala, so a permit applies. Usually combined with Kodaikanal rather than with the coastal destinations.

Palani and Trichy sit on the northern routes and are often added as a stop rather than a stay.

The honest planning advice

Fewer stops than you think. The distances here are long, the roads through the temple towns are slow, and a circuit that reads comfortably on a map is frequently one destination too ambitious.

Rameswaram plus Kanyakumari plus Kodaikanal plus Thekkady is a genuinely good week. Compressed into four days it becomes a driving holiday with brief pauses at temples, which is not what anyone books it for. Our drivers will tell you which one to drop, and that advice is worth more than the kilometres you save.

Who travels this way

Predominantly extended families and older travellers — several generations, many bags, long days, early starts. That is a fair description of what an Ertiga does well with four or five aboard, and it is also why we are direct about the third row on a five-day circuit: it is a long time to sit there. When there are six of you for that long, we will move you to a larger SARA CAB vehicle instead.

Outstation in Madurai — FAQs

Can you quote a three-day or five-day circuit as one price?

Yes, and it is how we prefer to work here. Tell us the destinations and the days and we return one figure covering distance, the daily minimum across the days, driver bata per day, night halt, and permits where a border is crossed. Toll and parking stay at actuals with receipts.

Which circuit fits in three days from Madurai?

Madurai, Rameswaram and back, with a night at Rameswaram, is comfortable in three. Adding Kanyakumari makes it a hard three and a good four. Trying to add Kodaikanal as well turns it into a week of driving compressed into four days, and we will tell you so.

Does Thekkady need a permit?

Yes, it is in Kerala. Rameswaram, Kanyakumari, Kodaikanal and Palani are all Tamil Nadu and need none. Permits are charged at actuals and quoted before you travel; we already hold the Kerala one.

How does the driver's overnight work on a circuit?

A night halt allowance covers the driver's stay, charged per night as its own line. You do not arrange their accommodation, and it is not folded into the per-kilometre rate.

Is the Pamban crossing to Rameswaram difficult?

Not difficult, but it is the memorable part of the drive and worth timing for daylight rather than arriving after dark. Your driver will suggest a departure that gets you across the water with something to look at.
