Local Ertiga packages in Mysore — the city a package suits best

Of our five cities, Mysore is the one where an hourly package works most cleanly. The sights are concentrated, the city is compact, and the traffic is mild compared with Bangalore or Chennai. Eight hours and 80 km genuinely covers a full day here — with one enormous exception, which is Dasara.

The day almost everyone books

There is a natural Mysore day, and it is popular because it works:

Mysore Palace in the morning, before the heat and the crowds build.

Chamundi Hills next — the climb is part of the experience, and the enormous Nandi partway down is the stop people remember more than the summit.

Then either the zoo, which is genuinely one of the better ones in the country, or St Philomena’s Cathedral, depending on how much walking the group still has in it.

That is a full, unhurried eight hours, and it stays comfortably inside 80 km.

Where local ends — the two that sit on the line

Inside a package: the palace quarter, Jayalakshmipuram, Vijayanagar, Kuvempunagar, Gokulam, the zoo, and the Chamundi Hills climb.

On the boundary, usually per kilometre: Srirangapatna with its fort and temples, and Brindavan Gardens.

Brindavan is worth a specific note. It is best in the evening, for the illuminated fountains — which means a late finish and extra hours on top of a day package. Rather than stretch a package awkwardly across it, we quote the evening as its own trip. That is usually cheaper and always clearer.

Well outside: Nanjangud, Hunsur, Bandipur, Nagarhole, Coorg.

Garage-out to garage-in

Package hours and kilometres run from when the car leaves our base to when it returns, not from when you got in — the standard in this market, stated because the operators who leave it unstated are relying on you assuming otherwise.

Dasara suspends all of the above

During Dasara in September and October, the city fills, the procession routes close roads, and the comfortable day described above stops being comfortable. Every leg takes longer, the palace is at its busiest, and cross-town journeys become unpredictable.

Book weeks ahead rather than days, and accept that local knowledge can route you around congestion but cannot open a closed road.

Local Packages in Mysore — FAQs

What counts as local in Mysore?

The city and its immediate surroundings — the palace quarter, Jayalakshmipuram, Vijayanagar, Kuvempunagar, Gokulam, the zoo — plus the climb up Chamundi Hills. Srirangapatna and Brindavan Gardens sit right on the edge and are usually quoted per kilometre; Nanjangud, Hunsur and Bandipur are well outside.

Is Brindavan Gardens included in a local package?

It sits just outside, so it is normally quoted per kilometre. It is also best in the evening for the illuminations, which means a late finish and extra hours — so we price the whole evening rather than stretching a package over it.

Can I do the palace and Chamundi Hills in one package day?

Comfortably, and it is the most-booked day we run here. The palace in the morning, Chamundi Hills with the Nandi on the way down, and the zoo or St Philomena's in the afternoon fills eight hours without hurrying.

Is Mysore easier to get around than Bangalore?

Far easier. It is compact and the traffic is mild by comparison, so eight hours and 80 km genuinely covers a full day of sightseeing here. The exception is Dasara, when none of that holds.

What happens during Dasara?

The city fills and the procession routes close roads, so a cross-town journey that normally takes twenty minutes does not. Book weeks ahead, expect every leg to take longer, and accept that no amount of local knowledge opens a closed road.
