What is at Pondicherry
Pondicherry is the one destination on this list where the drive is part of the holiday. The East Coast Road runs beside the Bay of Bengal for long stretches, past salt pans, fishing villages and casuarina, and it is a genuinely pleasant three hours rather than a distance to be endured.
At the far end, the French Quarter is the reason most people come: mustard and white colonial houses, bougainvillea over the walls, blue shutters, and streets laid out on a grid that feels nothing like the rest of Tamil Nadu. The promenade along the seafront is closed to traffic in the evenings and the whole town turns out to walk it.
Auroville, the experimental township north of the town, is a half-day of its own and worth planning for rather than squeezing in.
And Mahabalipuram, about a third of the way down the ECR, is the stop that makes this route better than the sum of its parts — the Shore Temple and the rock-cut monuments are directly on your road, and skipping past them to save an hour is a poor trade.
Why this route suits an Ertiga
A short, flat, comfortable run with a group who will want to get in and out of the car several times along the way. Six passengers are entirely comfortable over three hours, and with the third row folded there is room for a weekend’s luggage plus whatever the market at Pondicherry produces.

Which road do you take to Pondicherry?
ECR, the East Coast Road, essentially always. It is shorter to Pondicherry than the inland route, it runs beside the sea for much of the way, and it passes Mahabalipuram. GST Road is the wrong choice for this destination.
Can we stop at Mahabalipuram on the way?
Yes, and most people should. It is directly on the ECR about a third of the way down, so it costs you an hour or two rather than a detour. Say so when you book and the driver builds it into the timing.
Is a permit needed for Puducherry?
Yes, Puducherry is a separate union territory, so a permit applies. It is charged at actuals and quoted before you travel.
Is a one-way drop or a round trip better?
If you are staying a night or more and coming back with us, a round trip is cheaper than two drops. For a one-way move — flying out of Chennai, or continuing south — take the drop.
How long does the drive take?
Around three and a quarter hours without stops, longer at weekends when the ECR fills with Chennai traffic heading down the coast. With a Mahabalipuram stop, plan on most of the morning.
