The western approach
Kodaikanal can be reached from either Coimbatore or Madurai, and it is worth being straight about the difference: from Coimbatore it is the long way round.
The road runs out through Palani and comes at the Palani hills from the west, about four and a quarter hours. Madurai’s approach, up the Batlagundu ghat, is roughly three. If you are choosing where to start from, that matters.
What Coimbatore’s route has in its favour is Palani itself, sitting directly on the way.
Palani, which you should not drive past
The Dhandayuthapani Swamy temple at Palani is one of the six principal abodes of Murugan and among the busiest pilgrimage sites in Tamil Nadu. It stands on a hill above the town, and getting up is part of the experience — there are steps, a winch railway and a ropeway, so the climb is optional.
It is a genuine destination in its own right, and building an hour or two for it turns a long transfer into a proper day. Say so at booking.
What is at Kodaikanal
Kodaikanal sits at around 2,100 metres in the Palani hills, and it is the quieter, greener, wetter alternative to Ooty.
Kodai Lake with its walking path is the centre of things. Coaker’s Walk runs along a cliff edge with an enormous view when the cloud allows. Pillar Rocks — three granite columns standing together — and Guna Cave beneath them are the best of the outlying sights. Dolphin’s Nose is a flat rock projecting over a sheer drop, reached on foot.
Bear Shola Falls and Silver Cascade are the accessible waterfalls, both better after rain.
The shola forest patches around the town are the thing that distinguishes Kodaikanal from other hill stations — genuine remnant high-altitude forest rather than plantation, and quiet if you walk twenty minutes from the lake.
Why this route suits an Ertiga
Over four hours, of which the last part is a ghat climb, with luggage for two or three nights. For four or five people the boot handles it with the third row folded and the ride is comfortable on the rougher upper sections. Six adults over four hours and a climb is a long stint in the third row — on the Coimbatore approach more than the Madurai one, simply because it is an hour longer.

Is Coimbatore a good starting point for Kodaikanal?
It works, but it is the long way round. The road goes out through Palani and approaches from the west, roughly four and a quarter hours. From Madurai the same hill station is about three. If you have a choice of starting point, Madurai is the shorter run.
Can we stop at Palani on the way?
Yes, and most people should — the Murugan temple on the hill is one of the six principal Murugan shrines and it is directly on this road. There is a winch railway and a ropeway up, so you do not have to climb the steps unless you want to.
Is a permit needed?
No. Both Coimbatore and Kodaikanal are in Tamil Nadu.
How does this compare with going to Ooty from Coimbatore?
Ooty is much closer — under three hours against over four — and the climb is better surfaced. Kodaikanal is quieter, greener and less commercialised. If you want the shorter trip take Ooty; if you want the calmer hill station, Kodaikanal is worth the extra distance.
Is it cold?
Yes, more than people expect, and especially in the evenings. You will have left Coimbatore in real heat that morning, which makes the contrast sharper. Bring a layer even in the hot months.
