Three obstacles, one drive
Mysore to Kozhikode is only about 215 km and it takes five hours, which tells you most of what you need to know. Three things slow it down, in order:
Bandipur, where the highway crosses a tiger reserve and closes overnight. Deliberately unhurried driving, and a hard limit on when you can pass.
The Wayanad plateau, reached by a climb and then crossed on ordinary roads through spice and coffee country.
The Thamarassery ghat, the long hairpin descent from the plateau down to the coastal plain. This is the section that defines the journey — it is slow, it is beautiful, and it is much better in daylight than at dusk.
Leave by six and all three go smoothly. Leave at noon and you are descending a mountain in the dark at the end of a five-hour drive.
Breaking it at Wayanad
Wayanad sits directly on this road, roughly halfway, which makes it the obvious split. A night there turns a demanding single drive into two easy halves and gives you a district worth seeing — Edakkal, Chembra, the waterfalls.
A good number of our bookings on this corridor are really Mysore–Wayanad–Kozhikode across two or three days, and that is the version we would recommend.
What is at Kozhikode
Kozhikode — Calicut — is where Vasco da Gama landed in 1498, and the city has been a trading port for far longer than that. It is not a monument city; what it has is a working waterfront and a food culture that people travel specifically for.
Kozhikode beach with its old pier stumps, and the Mananchira tank in the centre. Kappad, north of the city, is the landing site itself and is quiet. Beypore, south, still builds uru — wooden dhows — by hand, and the yards can be visited. It is one of the more remarkable things on the Kerala coast.
The food is the reason many people come: Malabar biryani, the Kozhikode halwa sold along Mittai Theruvu — Sweet Meat Street — and banana chips fried in coconut oil. It is a distinct cuisine, not a variation on Kerala’s.
Why this route suits an Ertiga
Five hours with two slow forest sections and a long ghat descent, carrying luggage for a coastal trip. The ride quality helps on the descent’s rougher patches and the car is easy to place on a wet hairpin. For four or five people, comfortable. For six adults with a mountain descent at the end, we would size up.
