The longest run we publish
At around 340 km this is the longest route on the site, and it deserves an honest opening: this is not a comfortable morning’s drive. Six and a half hours up through Tumkur, Chitradurga and Hospet, across increasingly dry and open Deccan country.
Which is why the most useful advice on this page is to stop halfway.
Chitradurga sits at roughly the midpoint and its fort — seven concentric walls wrapped over a chain of granite hills, with an ingenious water system still visible — is worth two hours in its own right. Taking it turns one gruelling day into two pleasant halves, and you arrive at Hampi with something left.
What is at Hampi
Hampi is the ruined capital of the Vijayanagara empire, and its scale takes people by surprise: not a monument but a city spread across many square kilometres of extraordinary boulder-strewn landscape, with the Tungabhadra running through it.
The Virupaksha temple is still an active place of worship with a tall gopuram you see from a distance. The Vittala temple complex holds the famous stone chariot and the musical pillars. The Hazara Rama temple’s walls are covered with narrative friezes. Hemakuta hill is where people go for sunset, and the Matanga hill climb gives the best overall view of the site.
Two practical things matter more than any of that.
You cannot see Hampi from a car. The site is walked or cycled between drop points. Your driver repositions as you move between clusters, which works well — but plan on being on your feet.
Avoid the hot months. This is open granite country with negligible shade, and it radiates heat. November to February is remarkable. April and May are punishing.
Why this route suits an Ertiga
A long highway run followed by repeated short repositioning on rough site roads — the second half of which suits a smaller vehicle better than a large one. For four or five people with luggage for three days, comfortable and economical. For six adults over six and a half hours, we would put you in something bigger, and say so before you booked rather than after.

Can Hampi be done as a weekend from Bangalore?
Two nights is the minimum and it is tight. Six and a half hours each way means a Friday-night or very early Saturday departure, one full day at the site, and a long Sunday drive. Three days is much better, because Hampi is enormous and walkable rather than drivable.
Should we break the journey?
We recommend it. Chitradurga is roughly halfway and its hill fort is genuinely worth two hours, which turns a punishing drive into two reasonable ones. Say so at booking and the driver plans around it.
Is a permit needed?
No. Hampi is in Karnataka, so no interstate permit applies on this route.
How much walking is involved at Hampi?
A great deal. The site covers many square kilometres and the best of it is reached on foot or by bicycle between car drops. Tell your driver which cluster you want next and he will reposition, but do not expect to see Hampi from the car.
What time of year should we avoid?
The hot months. Hampi is open boulder country with almost no shade and the granite holds heat brutally. Between roughly November and February it is superb; in April and May it is an endurance exercise.
