Ooty sits high in the Nilgiris, cold by Indian standards, and reached from Bangalore by one of the longest drives in our network.
The town’s attractions are well known — the Botanical Gardens, the tea estates below the town, Doddabetta for the view, and the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, the narrow-gauge rack railway that climbs from Mettupalayam. What distinguishes this route is not the destination but what you pass through to reach it.
The road runs down through the Mysore corridor and out past Gundlupet, then into the Bandipur reserve. That stretch is genuinely wild — elephants, gaur and deer cross the highway, and the reserve closes to through traffic overnight to protect them. That closure is a hard constraint on this journey, not a suggestion, and it is the reason the departure time is set by the road rather than by you.
Beyond Bandipur the route climbs into the Nilgiris. It is a long day, and the sensible version of this trip breaks it at Mysore — either as a stop or as a night — which turns an exhausting run into two comfortable ones and lets you see Mysore properly on the way.
Why this route suits an Ertiga
Honestly, this is the route where we are most likely to suggest something larger if there are six of you. It is a long day, it ends with a ghat climb, and the third row is not where you want to spend that. For four or five people with luggage it is a comfortable and economical way to make a long journey.

It can, depending on the road taken. The highway through the reserve closes to traffic overnight to protect animal crossings, and that constrains when a trip can pass through. We plan the departure around it rather than discovering it at a closed barrier.
Is a permit needed?
Yes. Ooty is in Tamil Nadu and you are starting in Karnataka, so an interstate permit applies. It is charged at actuals and quoted before you travel; we hold it already.
How long is the drive?
Allow most of the day rather than a number of hours. It is a long run before you even reach the ghat, and then the climb sets its own pace. Leaving early is not optional on this route.
Is it better to go via Mysore?
The road runs through that corridor, and breaking the journey at Mysore or Gundlupet makes a long day considerably more pleasant. Some groups split it deliberately with a night in Mysore.

No. This is a two-night route at minimum. Anyone offering it as a day trip from Bangalore is selling you fourteen hours in a car.
