Karnataka’s road to Tirumala
Tirupati is reachable from both Bangalore and Chennai, and the two trips are genuinely different journeys to the same appointment.
From Bangalore it is around four and a half hours, east through Kolar and Chittoor, crossing into Andhra Pradesh — so a permit applies that Chennai travellers pay too, but on a different border.
From Chennai it is shorter. If you have a choice of starting point, Chennai is the quicker run. Most people do not have that choice, which is why this page exists.
What both share is the thing that actually controls the trip: your darshan slot sets the departure time, not the road. Leave Bangalore around four and you are on the hill before the queues. Leave at seven and you are in them.
What is at Tirupati
The Venkateswara temple at Tirumala, on the hill above Tirupati town, is among the most visited places of worship in the world, and the scale of the crowd management reflects it — a queue system, timed tokens and a hill that receives tens of thousands of pilgrims daily.
Sort your darshan arrangements before you book the car. The type of darshan you hold determines when you need to arrive, and everything else follows from it.
The ghat road up to Tirumala is a fine drive — a steady climb through forested hills — and the arrangements for vehicles at the top change periodically, so your driver will tell you where he can wait.
Down in the town, Sri Kalahasti is close by and is one of the Pancha Bhoota Sthalas, the five elemental Shiva temples, representing wind. A great many pilgrims pair the two, and it adds hours rather than a day.
Chandragiri fort and Talakona falls are the non-pilgrimage options and are genuinely pleasant if you have a spare afternoon.
Why this route suits an Ertiga
Four and a half hours out, a long wait while you are at the temple, and four and a half back — usually with a family group of five or six including older relatives. Six seats keep the family in one car, the step-in is easy, and the wait is comfortable. The car will be parked for hours, so a round trip with waiting is the right structure here rather than two separate drops.
