Chennai to Rameswaram is around 560 km — the longest pilgrimage journey we run — and it ends on an island at the tip of a sand spit pointing at Sri Lanka.
Nine hours of driving before anybody stops for anything. So the useful content on this page is about structure, not about the road.
Break it at Madurai
Madurai sits at roughly three quarters of the way, and it is not a compromise stop — it is one of the oldest cities in India with a temple complex worth a day of anybody’s time.
The natural trip is therefore: Chennai to Madurai on day one, Meenakshi in the evening or the following morning, then the shorter run out to Rameswaram. That turns a punishing single day into two good ones and costs a night.
The alternative, common with pilgrimage groups, is to travel overnight to Madurai and continue in the morning. The highway is good and quiet after dark.
Either way, aim to cross Pamban in daylight.
The crossing
The road to Rameswaram runs across the sea on the Pamban crossing, with the old rail bridge running parallel. Shallow, clear, turquoise water on both sides, fishing boats, and the island ahead.
It is the part of this journey people remember, and it is entirely wasted in the dark. Time the last leg for morning light if you can.
What is at Rameswaram
The Ramanathaswamy temple is one of the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines and holds the longest temple corridor in India — a run of carved pillars that has to be walked to be understood. The twenty-two wells within the complex are part of the pilgrimage.
Dhanushkodi, at the far tip, is the place that stays with people: a town destroyed by the 1964 cyclone and left as ruins on a narrow spit of sand with the Bay of Bengal on one side and the Gulf of Mannar on the other. The drive out to it is an experience in its own right.
APJ Abdul Kalam’s memorial in the town draws steady visitors.
Why this route suits an Ertiga
A very long flat run, usually with a family group and often with older relatives making a pilgrimage — which is where an easy step-in and six seats matter. Over nine hours in one push, six adults is too many for this car and we will say so. Split across two days with a night at Madurai, it works comfortably for a family of five with a week’s luggage and the third row folded.

Is this a one-day drive?
It is around nine hours before stops, so technically yes and practically no. Almost everyone should break it at Madurai, which sits conveniently at the three-quarter mark and is worth a night in itself.
Should we travel overnight instead?
It is common on this route, particularly for pilgrimage groups who want to arrive for a morning temple visit. The highway to Madurai is good at night; the last stretch to Rameswaram is better in daylight.
Why does the Pamban crossing need daylight?
Because it is the best part of the journey. You cross a couple of kilometres of shallow turquoise sea with the old rail bridge alongside. In the dark it is just a road.
Is a permit needed?
No. Both Chennai and Rameswaram are in Tamil Nadu.
Can we add Dhanushkodi?
Yes, and having come this far you should. It is the ruined town at the very tip of the spit, reached along a narrow strip of sand with sea on both sides. Say at booking so the driver allows the time.
