Periya Kovil
There are older temples in Tamil Nadu and there are larger ones. There is nothing quite like the Brihadeeswarar temple at Thanjavur — Periya Kovil, the big temple — which Rajaraja Chola completed around 1010 CE.
The vimana above the sanctum rises some sixty-six metres and it has stood for a thousand years without mortar, the granite blocks held by their own weight and cutting. At the top sits a single capping stone weighing many tonnes, and how it was placed is still argued about. The Nandi in the courtyard is carved from one block and is among the largest in India.
The scale is not the only thing. The proportion is extraordinary — the tower tapers in a way that makes it look taller than it is, and the whole compound is laid out to be walked rather than glanced at.
Allow two hours minimum. Three if you actually look.
Practicalities that matter
Go early or late. The compound is open granite with almost no shade and the stone radiates heat. A one o’clock arrival in the hot months turns the visit into an ordeal.
It is a living temple, not a monument, so worship continues and access to parts of it follows that rather than a visitor timetable.
The Thanjavur palace and the Saraswathi Mahal library — one of the oldest surviving libraries in Asia, with palm-leaf manuscripts — are close by and worth an hour if you have one.
The other two Chola temples
Thanjavur’s is one of three inscribed together as the Great Living Chola Temples:
Gangaikondacholapuram, built by Rajendra Chola to mark his campaign to the Ganga, with a vimana slightly smaller than his father’s at Thanjavur but by many accounts more refined. Much quieter, and the sculpture is exceptional.
Airavatesvara at Darasuram, near Kumbakonam — smaller again, later, and the most intricate of the three. The stone chariot steps that ring when struck are here.
Both are near Kumbakonam, which makes a two-day circuit the sensible way to do this: Thanjavur on one day, the other two on the next. We quote that as one journey.
The road
Six hours down the NH38 through Villupuram and Trichy. Chidambaram sits close to this corridor and makes a natural first-day stop for anyone wanting to extend the temple run further.
Why this route suits an Ertiga
Six hours of flat highway with a group who will be walking large stone compounds for two days — where the comfort that matters is getting in and out easily and the car being cool when you return to it. For four or five with luggage and the third row folded, comfortable over this distance. Six adults for six hours is a stretch, and on a two-day circuit that repeats, so we would size up.
