What is at Ooty
Ooty — Udhagamandalam — sits at over 2,000 metres in the Nilgiris, and the reason to come is that it is genuinely cold, which in this part of India is a novelty worth three hours of driving.
The town itself is busier and more built up than the postcards suggest. What holds up is the country around it: the Botanical Gardens and their Italianate terraces, the tea estates on the slopes below the town where you can watch the picking, and Doddabetta, the highest point in the Nilgiris, which on a clear morning gives you an enormous view and on a bad one gives you cloud.
Ooty Lake is best treated as pleasant rather than essential. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway up from Mettupalayam is the real attraction for many visitors — a narrow-gauge rack railway that predates almost everything else here — and it is worth knowing that some people ride the train up and have the car meet them at the top. The climb is the journey. From Mettupalayam the road turns up through the Kallar ghat and works its way through a long, well-known sequence of hairpin bends, gaining height fast enough that the vegetation changes as you go. It is one of the better drives in South India, and it is the reason to have a driver who has done it before rather than one reading a map.
Why this route suits an Ertiga
An MPV is a better ghat car than people expect: the ride is more comfortable over rough patches than a stiff body-on-frame SUV, and it is easier to place on a narrow bend. For four or five people it is ideal. For six adults on the full climb and back in a day, be honest about the third row.

How long does the climb actually take?
Longer than 85 km suggests. The run to Mettupalayam is quick and flat; the ghat above Kallar is a long sequence of hairpins that sets its own pace. Plan the climb as its own leg and allow close to three hours in total.
Is the road difficult for a loaded car?
Not difficult, but you feel the weight. With six people aboard the car works harder and the ascent is slower. The surface is generally good and the bends are well engineered — this is the gentlest of the four climbs out of Coimbatore.
Is a permit needed?
No. Both Coimbatore and Ooty are in Tamil Nadu. There is a hill charge on ghat routes in this market, which we quote before you travel rather than adding afterwards.
Can we do Ooty as a day trip?
Technically yes, and we will tell you not to. The climb each way consumes the day and you arrive home late having spent most of it in the car. Two days is far better value for the same driving.
When is the road busiest?
Weekends and the April-to-June season, when Ooty fills and the ghat can queue at the bends. An early start makes a real difference — leaving Coimbatore by seven gets you up before the traffic does.
