The Marayoor road
Munnar is reached from Coimbatore in four and a quarter hours and from Madurai in five and a half. The Madurai road is the longer one, and it has something the other does not.
The route runs west through Theni, climbs to the border, and comes up through Marayoor — which is one of the few places in India with natural sandalwood forest, protected and genuinely unusual. There are also dolmens and ancient rock paintings in the area, and the sugarcane jaggery made locally is a thing people stop for.
From there the road climbs onto the high tea plateau and into Munnar.
Leave at five, because of cloud
The high section fills with cloud from the early afternoon. When it does you lose both the pace and the view, and the view is most of why you took the long road.
A five o’clock departure from Madurai gets you over the top in clear air. It is the single most useful thing on this page.
Pair it with Thekkady
From Madurai, Thekkady and Munnar sit on the same axis — both reached through Theni and Kumily. Doing one without the other is a missed opportunity, and doing both means a single permit, a single driver and one circuit rather than two journeys.

What is at Munnar
Tea, at a scale difficult to convey — the hills are carpeted with it, clipped into contours that follow every fold of the land, and the estates run for miles.
Eravikulam National Park above the town holds the Nilgiri tahr and closes for part of the year during the calving period, so check before you plan a day around it. Mattupetty and Kundala dams sit in the high country. Top Station gives the long view back toward Tamil Nadu on a clear morning and nothing at all on a bad one.
The tea museum in town explains the industry properly and is a good wet-afternoon option, of which Munnar provides many.
Why this route suits an Ertiga
Five and a half hours with a long climb and a border crossing, carrying luggage for several days. For four or five people the boot handles it with the third row folded and the ride is comfortable on the rougher high sections. Six adults across that much climbing — repeated if you continue to Thekkady — is more than we would recommend from this car.

Longer. From Madurai it is around five and a half hours out through Theni and up via Marayoor; from Coimbatore it is four and a quarter. The Madurai road takes you through the sandalwood forest at Marayoor, which the other does not.
Is a permit needed?
Yes. Munnar is in Kerala and you start in Tamil Nadu, so an interstate permit applies, charged at actuals and quoted before you travel.
Why the five o'clock start?
Cloud. The high approach fills with mist from the early afternoon, which slows the driving and removes the view. Getting over the top in the morning is a different journey from doing it at three.
Can we combine it with Thekkady?
Yes, and it is the natural pairing from Madurai — Thekkady on the way out or back, since both are reached through Theni and Kumily. Two or three nights covers both properly and we quote it as one circuit.
Day trip?
No. Five and a half hours each way to a place whose entire point is the landscape makes no sense in a day. Two nights minimum.
