The tower on the emblem
If you have looked at anything official in Tamil Nadu — a government letterhead, a bus, a state seal — you have seen the gopuram of the Andal temple at Srivilliputhur. It was adopted as the state emblem, and at around 59 metres it is the tallest in the district.
What is striking when you arrive is the contrast: a tower of that scale rising out of a small, quiet town ninety minutes from Madurai, with none of the crowds of Madurai or Palani.
The temple is dedicated to Andal, the only woman among the twelve Alvar saints, who is held to have been born here — and to Vatapatrasayi, the reclining Vishnu. The Aadi Pooram festival in July or August is the town’s biggest event and worth avoiding unless you have come for it.
Palkova
The other reason people stop. Srivilliputhur palkova is milk reduced slowly and patiently until it is dense and grainy and sweet, and it carries a geographical indication tag — the town’s second claim on the state’s attention.
It does not keep well beyond a couple of days, which is why it has never become a national brand and why buying it here is different from buying it elsewhere. Your driver will know which shops make their own.
Beyond the town
West of Srivilliputhur the land rises into the Western Ghats foothills, and the Srivilliputhur Megamalai Tiger Reserve — formerly the grizzled squirrel sanctuary — protects one of the few populations of the grizzled giant squirrel anywhere.
It is a working conservation area rather than a visitor attraction, so access varies and should be checked before you build a day around it. But the drive up into those foothills is quiet and green and almost entirely untravelled.
Rajapalayam, close by, gives its name to the Indian sighthound breed, and Tirunelveli is further down the same road for anyone continuing south.
Why this route suits an Ertiga
Ninety minutes each way with a family group — often an extended one, since this is a trip people make with grandparents rather than alone. Easy step-in and six seats matter more than boot space, and the third row is entirely comfortable over a run this short. The car waits while you are at the temple, so a round trip with waiting is the sensible structure.
