One hill, three ways up
Palani is a pilgrimage trip, and unusually for a route page the practical question is not about the road at all. It is about how you get up the hill.
The Dhandayuthapani Swamy temple stands on a granite hill above the town, and there are three ways to reach it:
The steps. A genuine climb, and the traditional route — many pilgrims do it barefoot. In the afternoon sun it is punishing, and we would not recommend it for older visitors.
The winch railway. A funicular that has been running for decades, and the option most families take.
The ropeway. Faster, with a view.
Most people take a mechanical option up and walk down, which is the sensible compromise. Whatever you choose, go early — by six from Madurai. The hill heats up quickly and the temple is quieter in the morning.
Why the temple matters
Palani is one of the Arupadai Veedu, the six principal abodes of Murugan, and it is among the most visited temples in Tamil Nadu. The deity here is made of a distinctive material — navapashanam, a compound of nine substances — and the panchamirtham offering, a preparation of banana, jaggery, ghee, cardamom and dates, is famous enough that people buy it in quantity to take home. It now carries a geographical indication tag.
Thaipusam, in January or February, is the festival when this becomes one of the busiest places in South India, with pilgrims walking from great distances. If you are travelling then, book far ahead and expect the town to be full.
The road
Out through Batlagundu and Ottanchatram, two and three quarter hours of straightforward driving with the Palani hills rising ahead of you for the last stretch. Ottanchatram is worth knowing about for anyone interested — it has one of the larger vegetable markets in the region, busy from before dawn.
Palani also sits on the western approach to Kodaikanal, which is why a great many bookings pair the two into a two-day trip.
Why this route suits an Ertiga
A short run carrying a family group, frequently including elderly relatives making a pilgrimage — which is exactly where an MPV earns its place over a sedan. High seats, wide-opening doors and an easy step-in matter more on this route than boot space, and six seats mean the whole family travels together rather than in two cars.

How do we get up to the temple?

What time should we leave Madurai?
By six in the morning. The temple is busiest later, the hill is hot from mid-morning, and an early arrival means a calmer darshan and a climb that is not an ordeal.
Is a permit needed?
No. Palani is in Tamil Nadu, about two and three quarter hours from Madurai.
Can we combine it with Kodaikanal?
Yes, and they sit naturally together — Palani is on the western approach to the Kodai hills. A common two-day trip is Palani in the morning and up to Kodaikanal afterwards.
Round trip or drop?
Round trip for a temple visit, since you want the car waiting while you go up. A drop makes sense only if you are continuing to Kodaikanal or Coimbatore rather than returning.
