The stop most people drive past
Coonoor sits partway up the Kallar ghat, about forty minutes below Ooty, and the overwhelming majority of visitors drive straight through it.
That is the argument for stopping. Coonoor is smaller, quieter, cheaper and surrounded by tea rather than by a town. Ooty has more hotels, more restaurants and considerably more traffic. If you want the Nilgiris rather than a hill-station holiday, Coonoor is the better base — and Ooty is a short drive away when you want it.
The climb is also shorter: just over two hours from Coimbatore, on the same well-surfaced ghat with its known sequence of hairpins.
What is at Coonoor
Sim’s Park is the botanical garden, laid out on a slope, and better than its modest reputation.
Dolphin’s Nose is the viewpoint, looking down a deep valley toward Catherine Falls with the plains beyond on a clear day. Lamb’s Rock is on the same road and quieter.
Tea is the thing here. The estates around Coonoor are working farms and several take visitors, and the difference between estate tea and what you buy in a shop is genuinely worth the hour. The tea factories in the area do tours.
Catherine Falls and Law’s Falls both need rain to be worth the trip.
And the Nilgiri Mountain Railway stops here. The Mettupalayam to Coonoor section is the steepest part of the whole line — the rack-and-pinion stretch — and it is the most impressive railway hour in South India. A good option is to have us drive to Mettupalayam, take the train up, and have the car meet you in Coonoor with the luggage.
Why this route suits an Ertiga
Two hours with a moderate climb, carrying luggage for two or three nights. This is one of the ghat routes where an Ertiga is genuinely well suited rather than merely adequate — the ascent is gentle, the distance short, and the ride quality helps on the rougher patches near the top. Comfortable for six over this distance, which is not something we can say about the longer hill runs.

How long is the climb?
Just over two hours from Coimbatore — around forty minutes less than Ooty, because Coonoor sits partway up the same Kallar ghat.
Is a permit needed?
No. Coonoor is in Tamil Nadu. A hill charge applies on ghat routes, quoted before you travel.
Can we do Ooty as a day trip from Coonoor?
Easily — it is a short run further up the hill. That is one of the arguments for staying here: you get Ooty's sights without staying in Ooty's traffic.
Is the mountain railway worth using?
