The hand-off leg
This is not a destination route. It is the connection between two different holidays, and understanding that is the whole point of the page.
Coimbatore is where hill trips start — Ooty, Valparai, Munnar, Kodaikanal. Madurai is where temple circuits start — Rameswaram, Kanyakumari, Thekkady. A great many travellers do one and then the other, and this four-hour run across the interior is the joint between them.
Which means the useful question is rarely “how much to Madurai”. It is “what is the whole trip” — because if you are continuing south from Madurai, this leg should be priced as part of a circuit rather than as an isolated drop, and you should certainly not be paying for a return to Coimbatore you will never make.
The road
The NH83 via Dindigul, under four hours, flat and unremarkable in the good sense. No ghats, no border, no weather.
Palani sits close to this road and slots in easily for anyone who wants the Murugan temple — an hour or two rather than a detour.
Kodaikanal is a different matter. It is reachable from this corridor but it is a climb up a ghat, not a stop, and adding it turns a transfer into a two-day trip. We will happily price that; we would rather you knew which one you were buying.
Dindigul itself is worth a mention for its fort on a rock and, more practically, for the biryani, which locals will tell you is the point of the town.
What is at Madurai
Madurai is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in India and the Meenakshi Amman Temple is its centre — a complex whose gopurams you see from well outside the city.
The practical note we repeat everywhere because it matters: the car cannot drop you at the temple entrance. The streets there are narrow and partly restricted; you walk the last stretch and the driver waits at a designated spot. Agree the meeting point before you go in.
From here the far south opens up, which is why most of these arrivals are a beginning rather than an end.
Why this route suits an Ertiga
Four hours of flat road, mid-circuit, carrying a week’s luggage rather than an overnight bag — which is exactly the configuration where the folded third row earns its place for four or five travellers. On a longer circuit, tell us the group size for the whole trip rather than this leg, because the right car for a four-hour transfer is not necessarily the right car for eight days of them.
