One way is charged for your direction plus the minimum distance. A round trip charges both legs with the daily minimum applied — which is why the one-way total is lower even at a higher per-km rate. Prefer a single agreed figure with toll and permit folded in? Ask for an all-inclusive quote.
A working route
Not every journey is a holiday. Coimbatore to Salem is a business run, and most of what we drive on it is a same-day return: out in the morning, meetings, back in the evening.
The road helps. The NH544 via Erode is flat, fast and unremarkable — no ghats, no state border, no weather to plan around. Under three hours each way means a comfortable working day rather than a compromise.
So the useful content here is not about sights. It is about how to structure the day.
Book the round trip with waiting
For a business day this is almost always the right structure. Meetings overrun, factory visits take longer than scheduled, and the value of a car waiting outside is considerably more than the difference between a round trip and two drops.
Waiting is charged by the hour at the published rate, so a long day is predictable rather than a surprise.
The other thing worth saying: Erode is on the way. A good number of our passengers on this corridor have business in Erode as well, and adding a stop there costs very little because you drive through it anyway.
What is at Salem
Salem is a steel and textile city ringed by hills, and it is not a tourist destination. Two things are worth knowing about anyway.
Yercaud is a small hill station on the Shevaroy hills directly above the city, reached by a short climb of twenty or so hairpins. It is far quieter than Ooty or Kodaikanal, has a lake, some coffee and orange growing, and a genuinely pleasant climate. For anyone with a spare day at the end of a business trip it is the obvious use of it.
Kurumbapatti zoological park and the Sugavaneswarar temple in the old town fill an afternoon if you have one.
Otherwise Salem is a place people go to work, and this page is written on that assumption.
Why this route suits an Ertiga
Business travel usually means three or four people, laptop bags and samples rather than suitcases, and a lot of getting in and out at different sites during the day. Six seats give you room to work in the car, the ride is quiet enough for phone calls, and the running cost over a regular weekly trip is materially lower than a larger MPV. This is a route where an Ertiga is the sensible choice rather than a compromise.
Still coming to this page: named toll plazas and amounts, named break stops. Those come from our own drivers rather than from a map, and we would rather leave them off than print a figure we have not checked. Ask on the call and we will tell you the toll for this route.
All bookings include a professional driver. We do not offer self-drive rentals.
Booking this route
We drive Salem to Coimbatore as well, at the same rate — the fare depends on the distance and the direction of travel, not on which end you start from. There is one page for both directions rather than two pages saying the same thing.

Coimbatore to Salem — FAQs
Is this mostly a business route?
Yes. Coimbatore and Salem are both industrial cities and most of what we drive here is same-day business travel — a morning out, meetings, an evening return. It is one of our more predictable runs.
How long is the drive?
Under three hours on the NH544 via Erode. It is a straightforward plains route with no ghats and no border, which is why a same-day return works comfortably.
Is a permit needed?
No. Both cities are in Tamil Nadu.
Round trip with waiting, or two drops?
Round trip with waiting, for a business day. You will not know when meetings finish, and having the car there is worth more than the fare difference. Waiting is charged by the hour at the published rate.
Is Yercaud worth adding?
If you have a spare day, yes. It is a small hill station above Salem, much quieter than Ooty or Kodaikanal, and the climb from Salem is short. It is the one reason people extend this trip rather than turning round.
