A route with a season, and a warning

This is the only page on this site that opens by telling you when not to travel.

Courtallam — Kuttralam — is a cluster of waterfalls in the Western Ghats foothills west of Tirunelveli, and the entire reason to go is water falling on you. The falls are fed by the monsoon. During and after the south-west monsoon, roughly June to September, they run hard and the place is remarkable. Outside that window, in a dry year, they can reduce to very little.

People drive three hours to see this and arrive to find a damp rock face. So: ask us before you book. Our drivers go there regularly and will tell you the current state honestly, including when the answer is “not this month”. We would rather lose the fare than take a booking that ends in disappointment.

The falls, and which is which

Main Falls has the strongest flow and the largest crowd, with changing facilities and a paved bathing area.

Five Falls — where the stream divides into separate cascades — is the one most people enjoy most, because you can stand under a manageable amount of water rather than being pummelled.

Old Falls and Tiger Falls involve a walk and are correspondingly quieter.

Shenbaga Devi Falls is up a forest path and has a temple beside it.

Bathing here is treated as medicinal — the water passes over herbs and roots on its way down, and the local belief in its properties is old and firmly held. Whether or not you subscribe, the water is cold and the effect is bracing.

Practicalities that matter

Go early. The bathing areas fill from mid-morning in season, and it becomes a queue.

Bring a change of clothes and expect everything to be wet, including the car seats on the way home. Say so at booking and the driver will bring covers.

Tenkasi is close by, and the Kasi Viswanathar temple there has a very tall gopuram and few visitors — a good pairing if the falls disappoint or the crowd is impossible.

Why this route suits an Ertiga

Three and a quarter hours each way with a group who will come back wet. Six seats, a boot that takes bags of dry clothes and towels, and seats that can be covered — this is a practical rather than a glamorous requirement, and it is the one that matters on this trip. On a day trip the third row stays comfortable throughout.

Still coming to this page: named toll plazas and amounts, named break stops. Those come from our own drivers rather than from a map, and we would rather leave them off than print a figure we have not checked. Ask on the call and we will tell you the toll for this route.

All bookings include a professional driver. We do not offer self-drive rentals.

Booking this route

We drive Courtallam to Madurai as well, at the same rate — the fare depends on the distance and the direction of travel, not on which end you start from. There is one page for both directions rather than two pages saying the same thing.

Madurai to Courtallam — FAQs

When are the falls actually worth seeing?

During and after the south-west monsoon, broadly June to September, and again in the north-east monsoon in some years. Outside those windows the flow can drop to very little. If the falls are your reason for coming, ask us before you book — our drivers go regularly and will tell you honestly.

Will you tell us not to come?

Yes, if that is the honest answer. A three-hour drive to look at a damp rock face is not a booking we want, because you will remember it and so will your review. We would rather lose the fare.

Is a permit needed?

No. Courtallam is in Tamil Nadu, via Tirunelveli and Tenkasi.

Which falls should we go to?

Main Falls is the busiest and has the strongest flow. Five Falls is the one people enjoy most for bathing. Old Falls and Tiger Falls need a walk and are quieter. Your driver will suggest an order based on the crowd on the day.

Is it very crowded?

In season, extremely. It is a hugely popular local destination and the bathing areas fill from mid-morning. Arriving early is the difference between a pleasant morning and a queue.
