The run down from Madurai is straightforward: NH44 through Tirunelveli and Nagercoil, four and a half hours of good road with the landscape drying out and flattening as you go south, and the wind farms of the Aralvaimozhi gap turning on the horizon.

What is there
The Vivekananda Rock Memorial stands offshore on one of two rocks, reached by ferry — which is weather-dependent and does get suspended, so it is worth having a second plan. Beside it rises the Thiruvalluvar statue, 133 feet for the 133 chapters of the Thirukkural.
On the shore, the Bhagavathy Amman temple has drawn pilgrims to this point for far longer than the memorials have existed, and the Gandhi Mandapam is built so that the sun falls on the memorial stone on his birthday.
The sand on the beach is famously multicoloured, which sounds like a tourist claim until you look at it.
Why this route suits an Ertiga
Four and a half hours of flat, fast road with a group who are usually mid-circuit and carrying a week’s luggage. Fold the third row and that fits easily for four or five. If you want both sunrise and sunset, yes. Doing it as a day trip means picking one, and a 240 km drive each way to see one of them is a long day for a single view.
Is the memorial rock accessible?
It is reached by ferry, which runs subject to the sea and can be suspended in rough weather. It is worth having a second plan for the day, and your driver will know the state of things when you arrive.
