Two temple cities, two and a half hours apart
Madurai and Trichy sit close enough together on the NH38 that a day trip is genuinely comfortable, which is unusual for two sites of this significance.
The whole trick is the order you do things in, because one of the two involves climbing several hundred steps of bare granite in the open.
The right order
Srirangam first. Leave Madurai by seven and you are at the Ranganathaswamy temple in the cool of the morning. This is the largest functioning temple complex in the world — seven concentric walled enclosures with a living town inside the outer ones, and you can drive into part of it, which surprises everyone the first time. Allow two hours minimum; it is bigger than it looks and it looks enormous.
Jambukeswarar at Thiruvanaikaval is close by, one of the five elemental Shiva temples representing water, and far quieter than its neighbour. Worth an hour if you have one.
Rockfort last. The temple on the granite outcrop above the city is best in the late afternoon, when the steps have come out of the direct sun. The Thayumanaswami temple is partway up and Uchi Pillayar at the top, with Trichy and the Kaveri spread out below. Doing this at one o’clock is a decision people regret.
The Thanjavur extension
If you can spare a second day, Thanjavur is close and the Brihadeeswarar temple there is the high point of Chola architecture — a thousand years old, with a vimana that has stood without mortar throughout.
Madurai, Trichy and Thanjavur across two days is one of the better temple runs in South India, and we will quote it as a circuit rather than as three separate trips.
Why this route suits an Ertiga
Two and a half hours each way with a day of getting in and out at three or four sites in between — which is where six comfortable seats and easy access matter more than boot space. On a day trip the third row stays entirely usable because nobody is carrying luggage. On a two-day Thanjavur circuit, fold it down for the bags.

Can we do Srirangam and the Rockfort in one day from Madurai?
Yes, comfortably, if you go in the right order and leave by seven. Srirangam first while it is cool, the Rockfort in the late afternoon when the steps are bearable. Doing it the other way round means climbing several hundred steps of bare rock at midday.
How hard is the Rockfort climb?
A few hundred steps cut into the rock, in the open, with shrines on the way up to break it. It is manageable for most people but genuinely unpleasant in the middle of the day.
Is a permit needed?
No. Both cities are in Tamil Nadu, two and a half hours apart on the NH38.
Should we add Thanjavur?
If you have a second day, yes. The Brihadeeswarar temple at Thanjavur is arguably the finest thing the Cholas built and it is close to Trichy. Madurai, Trichy and Thanjavur makes an excellent two-day temple run.
Is this a day trip or a leg of a longer journey?
Both. Plenty of people do it as a day trip from Madurai, and plenty more are heading north toward Chennai and stopping in Trichy on the way. Tell us which and we will price it accordingly.
