What is at Rameswaram
Rameswaram sits on Pamban island, at the very end of a spit of land pointing toward Sri Lanka, and getting there is half of what makes it worth going.
The Ramanathaswamy temple is the reason most people come — one of the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines, and the site of the longest temple corridor in India, a staggering run of carved pillars that photographs badly and impresses in person. The twenty-two wells within the complex are part of the pilgrimage ritual, and the temple is busy from early morning.
Dhanushkodi, at the far tip, is the place that stays with people. A town destroyed by a cyclone in 1964 and left as ruins on a narrow strip of sand with the sea on both sides — the Bay of Bengal on one side, the Gulf of Mannar on the other. The road out to it is a genuine experience in itself.
APJ Abdul Kalam’s memorial in Rameswaram town draws steady visitors, and the Pamban bridge — the rail crossing running parallel to the road — is the image of this place.
Time the crossing for daylight. Everything else on this trip can be rearranged; that cannot. Crossing to the island in morning light, with the old bridge beside you and shallow clear water below, is the difference between a temple visit and a journey.
Why this route suits an Ertiga
Three and a half hours of flat, straightforward driving with a group who will want the car for the day at the far end — the temple, then Dhanushkodi, then back. Comfortable for six over this distance, and the boot handles an overnight for four or five with room to spare.

What time should we leave Madurai?
By six in the morning if you can. It puts you at the Pamban crossing in good morning light, which is the part of this journey people remember, and it gets the temple visit done before the middle of the day.
Is the Pamban crossing worth timing for?
Yes — it is the reason to drive this route rather than fly anywhere near it. Crossing a couple of kilometres of shallow turquoise sea with the old rail bridge alongside is genuinely memorable, and it is wasted in the dark.
Can we go on to Dhanushkodi?
Yes, and most people should. It is a further run out along the sand spit to the ruined town at the tip, and it is unlike anywhere else in India. Tell us at booking so the driver allows the time.
Is a permit needed?
No. Rameswaram is in Tamil Nadu, so no interstate permit applies on this route.
Day trip or overnight?
A day trip works if you leave early and accept a long day. An overnight is much better if you want Dhanushkodi as well as the temple, and it lets you see the crossing in both morning and evening light.
