The short way to Periya Kovil
Thanjavur is reachable from several directions and Madurai is the closest of the cities we serve — three and a half hours through Trichy, against six from Chennai.
That changes what the trip is. From Chennai, Periya Kovil is an expedition needing an overnight. From Madurai it is a comfortable day out, and if you are already in the far south on a temple circuit, this is the easy way to add the greatest of the Chola temples to it.
Srirangam, directly on the way
The route runs through Trichy, and Srirangam sits on an island in the Kaveri just before it.
The Ranganathaswamy temple there is the largest functioning temple complex in the world — seven concentric walled enclosures with a living town inside the outer ones, and you can drive into part of it, which surprises people every time.
Take it on the way out rather than on the return. Two hours in the morning while it is cool, then on to Thanjavur, works considerably better than trying to fit a complex of that size into a tired afternoon.
Adding Srirangam makes this a long day, and it is the main argument for an overnight rather than a return.
What is at Thanjavur
The Brihadeeswarar temple — Periya Kovil — completed by Rajaraja Chola around 1010 CE. The vimana rises some sixty-six metres and has stood a thousand years without mortar. The Nandi in the courtyard is carved from a single block.
Go in the morning. It is an open granite compound with very little shade and the stone radiates heat by the middle of the day.
The Thanjavur palace and the Saraswathi Mahal library, with its palm-leaf manuscripts, are nearby for anyone with an extra hour. Thanjavur is also the home of the veena and of Tanjore painting, and workshops for both can be visited.
Going further
If Periya Kovil leaves you wanting the rest, Gangaikondacholapuram and Darasuram complete the three UNESCO Chola temples, both near Kumbakonam and a short run on from Thanjavur. That is a two-night circuit from Madurai and we quote it as one journey.
Why this route suits an Ertiga
Three and a half hours each way with a stop at a very large temple in between — so the comfort that matters is easy access, six seats and a cool cabin to return to, rather than boot space. On a day trip the third row is entirely usable. If you extend into the full Chola circuit, tell us the group size for the whole trip rather than this leg.

A day trip works if you leave early and skip Srirangam. Adding Srirangam makes it a long day and an overnight is better. If you want the wider Chola trail as well, plan two nights and use Kumbakonam.

By half six. The temple compound is open granite with little shade and the stone holds heat, so morning is when it is worth walking.
